Omaha, NE – Oak Hills Country Club welcomed 69 Nebraska PGA Professionals & Associates for the Section’s second major championship of the 2024 season. Presented by Mizuno Golf, the Facilities Championship allowed all Class A PGA Members and registered PGA Associates to compete together in duos as long as they are employed at the same facility.
There were no limits on the number of different pairing combinations each facility could make. The format for the teams of two was one best-ball.
In team events, the crew at Firethorn Golf Club has been unstoppable in recent years and that continued once again. Steve Friesen, PGA put on one of the best displays we have seen of the season. In the two rounds, he made 13 total birdies to go along with an eagle. He played 14/36 (38%) of his holes under par and his three teammates from Firethorn GC played great golf on top of it.
After taking the lead through one completed round, Steve Friesen and Brady Schnell played the best together and finished with a blistering total of 20-under. The duo finished in first place after rounds of 60 and 62 which put them three strokes ahead of second. Schnell added six birdies and an eagle and through their 36 holes, the worst score they recorded was a par.
In addition to Friesen & Schnell winning, Friesen placed second with Mike Coatman of Firethorn GC as well as seventh with Derrick Burge. It was an extraordinary day for Team Firethorn, but there was incredible play from other facilities as well.
Tiburon Golf Club had three pairing combinations finish in the top 12 led by Jon Petersen, PGA and Carson Schaake with their T3 finish at 15-under. Happy Hollow Club had five teams finish in the top 15 with three of them finishing in the top 8. Ryan Vermeer, PGA made 12 birdies on the day and he helped lead their staff to great finishes across the board. Wayne Country Club, Lochland Country Club and Champions Run were the three other facilities with teams placing in the top 12.
We would like to thank General Manager and COO Mike Zadalis, PGA, Director of Golf Bobby O’Keefe, PGA, Director of Grounds Andy Rhylander and the entire staff at Oak Hills Country Club staff for hosting!
