Ashland, NE – At the end of each season, the Nebraska Section PGA hosts their Cup Series Championship, presented by Vinnie Krikac’s State Farm Insurance Agency. Quarry Oaks Golf Club plays host annually to a field made up of the top-28 Nebraska PGA Professionals on the season-long points list. Alongside the two-person Professional-only event, foursomes represented by two PGA Professionals and two University of Nebraska – PGA Golf Management students competed.

The Professional team format began with one best-ball on the front nine followed with a scramble on the back nine. The top five teams after 18 holes then competed in a ‘horse race’ shootout with their eyes set on the Vinnie Cup.

Christian Hall of Tiburon Golf Club and Tony Baranowski, PGA of Fremont Golf Club recorded one of the best front nine scores in the field with a 4-under – 31. Hall and Baranowski went onto shoot a bogey-free 10-under — 61 to grab the one seed in the shootout. Finishing runner-up was Alex Carper, PGA of Alex Carper Golf and Kevin Drew, PGA of PGA of America HQ at 8-under – 63. Three teams finished at 6-under – 65 to join the two at the top in the modified alternate shot horse race.

On No. 11 and the second hole of the shootout, Brian Steventon of Quarry Oaks Golf Club buried a 20-foot putt for birdie before Sam Jonell, PGA of Miracle Hills Golf & Tennis matched him. Steventon then hit a gutsy downhill shot in the chip-off to send him and Steve Friesen, PGA of Firethorn Golf Club to the next hole. After Hall and Baranowski were eliminated on No. 12, the two duos of Carper/Drew and Friesen/Steventon went head-to-head till No. 16.

On the uphill par four, Friesen hit a heroic shot to the green from the native area and Steventon capped it off with a 25-foot putt for birdie to capture the 2022 Nebraska PGA Cup Series Championship, presented by Vinnie Krikac’s State Farm Insurance Agency.

In the team event with the students and aspiring PGA Professionals, the foursome of Tony Baranowski, Christian Hall, Jackson Hamlin and Tyson Baldwin shot a combined 10-under par to win. Six birdies on the front nine and a bogey-free back propelled them to their victory. We would like to thank all of the students at the UNL PGM program that joined us for a great day and we’re excited about the recent growth and success within the program.
