Fremont, NE – The Nebraska Section PGA’s spring season continued at Fremont Golf Club with the 2023 HCIS Fremont Pro-Am. 24 teams made up of one Nebraska PGA Professional and three amateurs competed where perfect scoring conditions set up an exciting day. Six NEPGA Professionals shot in red figures but none better than Steve Friesen, PGA of Firethorn Golf Club.

Friesen opened his day with a 31 (4-under) on the front nine thanks to four birdies in his final six holes in the opening stretch. After a costly double-bogey on No. 13, Friesen responded with three birdies in a row and capped off his round with an impressive par save on the last. Friesen shot 65 (6-under) to top fellow Firethorn PGA Professional Brady Schnell by one shot. Mike Antonio, PGA, Mike Coatman, Shane Zywiec, PGA and Ryan Vermeer, PGA all shot solid rounds of 70 (1-under) in the Professional-only division.

In the team event, the format was played as 1 Net and 1 Gross Best-Ball in one of the tougher team competitions on our schedule. Low-Professional Steve Friesen, PGA and his amateur playing partners Pat Sullivan, Rick Wagner and Pat Wallace completed the “Firethorn Sweep” after shooting a team total of 18-under in route to their victory. The four of them made a combined 21 birdies or better on the day and finished four shots ahead of second. Ryan Vermeer, PGA of Happy Hollow Club and his amateur partners Darin Cook, Kris Brown and Kolby Brown took second place on the day with a team total of 14-under.
