Cornell Shines to Win Low-Professional Honors at Fremont Golf Club; Team Vermeer Brings Home Lone Ranger Title

Professionals teamed up with some of the top Amateurs in our state in a day that began with wind and rain before skies opened up and the sun came out. With trees lining the fairways to go along with thick rough, the course played tough and just four Nebraska PGA Professionals managed to shoot under par.

In the Professional-only field, The Players Club of Omaha’s Judd Cornell, PGA fired an impressive round of 2-under-par (69) to win low-Pro honors. After bogies on No. 4 and No. 5, Cornell went to birdie three out of his five next holes to get to 2-under-par. His lone blemish on the back nine came on the par 5 No. 13 but he gained the stroke back just two holes later with a birdie on No. 15. Not only is Cornell an exceptional Head Men’s Golf Coach at Creighton University, but he can play exceptional golf. Today’s victory gives him momentum heading into next week’s NEPGA Pro/Assistant Championship, one of the Section’s major events. Stone Creek’s TJ Loudner, PGA, PGA TOUR Rules Official Tom Hearn, PGA and Shadow Ridge’s Andrew Storm, PGA all tied in second at 1-under-par (70).

The format for the team event was 2-Net Lone Ranger Best Ball where on each hole, a different player’s score had to count towards the team score. Player A on 1, 5, 9 etc., Player B on 2, 6, 10 and so on. Happy Hollow Club’s Ryan Vermeer, PGA and his team of Amateurs made up of Bob Billmeyer, Leroy Kibby and Ralph Tschantz worked together nicely to shoot 12-under-par in the team event to beat Judd Cornell’s team by two shots.
